March 26, 1999
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland men's tennis team closed its five-match ACC road trip this afternoon with a loss to Wake Forest by a score of 7-0.
Wake Forest won the doubles point to open the match and then went on to win all six singles matches for the victory, but not without Maryland resistance. Maryland had its best outing of the road trip with two individuals having strong performances. Freshman Jon Murchison (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) won the Terps' only singles set of the day against Rick Phillipp. Murchison lost the first set, 6-4, but won the second set in a tiebreak by a score of 7-6 (6). However, he could not overcome a strong performance by Phillipp and lost the deciding set by a score of 6-2.
Sophomore Larry Chou (Potomac, Md./Churchill) dropped his match to Brett Mauro, but did not give in easily. After losing the first set 6-1, Chou almost got the upper hand on Mauro in the second set, but could not grab the victory and lost, 7-5.
Maryland falls to 3-7 on the season and 0-6 in the ACC, while Wake Forest evened its record at 8-8 and improves to 2-0 in the ACC. The Terps return to College Park for their next match on Sunday, March 28 against Clemson at 2:30 p.m.
