No. 7 Duke Picks Up ACC Win Over Wake Forest, 6-1

Deacons suffer first confernce loss of the year.

Durham, NC --- The seventh-ranked Duke men's tennis team captured an ACC victory over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 6-1, Wednesday at Duke Tennis Stadium. The loss drops Wake Forest to 10-9 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Blue Devils recorded wins in five of six singles matches and took two of three doubles matches to win the doubles point. At No.1 singles, Duke's Pedro Escudero, ranked 100th nationally, upset 50th-ranked Myles Clouston in three sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Duke recorded straight-set wins at No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles, as No. 2 Doug Root won 7-6, 6-2 over Raul Munoz, Dmitry Muzkya topped Michael Berger at No. 3, No. 4 Ramsey Smith had the most lopsided victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Johan Hansen, and Marko Cerenko took two sets over Justin Kaufman at No.6 singles. Wake Forest's lone singles victory came at the No.5 slot, where Brett Mauro defeated Porter Jones in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Deacon duo of Clouston and Munoz, ranked 12th nationally in doubles, defeated 36th-ranked Escudero/Root at No.1 doubles, 9-8. Duke won the doubles point, however, as Muzyka and Jordan Wile won at No.2, 8-3 and Andres Pedroso and Smith recorded a 9-8 victory at the No.3 doubles.

The Deacons will return to action on Saturday, April 3 as they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech.
