Women's Soccer Falls to Top-Ranked North Carolina, 3-0
#15 Deacs (12-5-1) begin preparations for ACC Tournament.
October 30, 1998
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - North Carolina junior Lorrie Fair scored two goals to lead top-ranked North Carolina to a 3-0 victory over 15th-ranked Wake Forest in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's soccer matchup at Spry Stadium on Friday night. The game was played before a Spry Stadium women's soccer record crowd of 2,719.
With the victory, North Carolina improved to 18-0 on the year and finished play in the ACC at 7-0. Wake Forest fell to 12-5-1 overall and 4-3 in league play.
The Tar Heels got on the board early in the first half when senior Cindy Parlow scored what proved to be the game winner at the 13:53 mark with a 15-yard lob shot over the reach of Demon Deacon goalkeeper Sari Rose off a feed from Meredith Florance.
The teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the opening period with each having opportunities to score. Parlow nearly scored again when her header hit the post and went wide and for the Deacons, Emily Taggart was unable to track down a loose ball behind Tar Heel keeper Siri Mullinix that would have evened the score at one. In the game's 44th minute Wake Forest's Rachael Lewis had a shot tipped just over the top of the goal by Mullinix that would have evened the score as well.
Fair struck for the first of her two goals early in the second half when she beat the Deacs' Erin Regan with a shot from 35 yards out at the 58:58 mark in the half. She gave the Tar Heels the 3-0 lead at 89:05 when she scored off a rebound of an Anne Remy.
The Deacs' best chance to score in the second half came in the game's 65th minute when an Anne Shropshire shot slid just wide of the left post after a cross from Stefanie Mathews.
The Demon Deacons and Tar Heels will both next be in action at the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Orlando, Fla., on Nov. 5-8. The Tar Heels will be the tournament's No. 1 seed while the Demon Deacons will be seeded fourth.
